What is Shirodhara?

about Shirodhara

The word Shirodhara consists of two words, Shir means head + Dhara means flow. Shirodhara is a classic Ayurvedic therapy which allows slowly and steadily dripping of medicated oil or decoction on the forehead. Shirodhara treatment in Ayurveda is considered one of the most nourishing and relaxing treatments.

In Ayurveda, Dhara is a therapeutic procedure that involves directing a continuous stream of warm herbal oil, milk or buttermilk over the forehead or a part of the body rhythmically or constantly.

Procedure of Shirodhara

After a person lies down with his or her eyes closed on the table, the procedure may start with an Abhyangam or body massage.  Oil or liquids used in the dhara are selected according to the client’s body type and health condition. After that, a stream of luke warm herbal oil is consistently and rhythmically dispensed in a flowing stream. Liquid is poured from the vessel with a hole at the bottle of the vessel. Complete procedure could take around 30 - 45 minutes depending on the client’s condition. Gentle head, neck and shoulder massage is given after the procedure.

Forehead is the preferred site for oil application as it has abundant nerve endings and is extremely sensitive. The pressure and rhythm of the stream of oil causes vibrations to occur on the forehead. Oil which is applied on the head, forehead helps to dilate the channels and increase blood flow to the brain. As a result, it offers relief from anxiety. The entire process of Shirodhara allows the body, mind and nervous system to enter in a relaxed mode which is usually experienced after deep meditation.
